Sometimes outsourcing looks completely different from the picture in your head. Here are some ways to get support without committing to the full thing:

Book a one-time engagement instead of an ongoing retainer. A single strategy session with the right person can set you up better than months of trying to figure it out alone. You get the expertise without the monthly commitment.

Start at someone's lowest tier. Dip your toe in the water. Get a feel for their style and whether they can actually help you. Stay there until you can afford more. There's no shame in starting small with someone you eventually want to work with at full capacity.

Hire for a small chunk instead of the whole thing. You don't have to outsource your entire bookkeeping to get help with your books. A quarterly bookkeeper might be all you need right now. Buy a website template from the designer you're dying to work with someday instead of waiting until you can afford a full custom build.

Consider a trade or barter. If you know someone whose work you respect and there's a mutual need, a services trade can be one of the most valuable arrangements in business. Both people get help. Both people get to experience working together. And nobody's writing a check they can't afford.

Here's the part that surprised me the most. The small help has been arguably MORE impactful than I expected. Not because the scope was huge, but because even a little bit of relief changed something in my brain.

It showed me that getting help was possible. That I didn't have to hold every single thing myself. That there were people who could do parts of this better and faster than me, and letting them do it freed me up to do the stuff that only I can do.

I think a lot of us, especially the ones who built our businesses from scratch with our bare hands, have this story running in the background that says we need to earn help. That we need to hit a certain revenue number or a certain milestone before we're allowed to bring someone in.

I've stretched myself this year to expand what "outsourcing" means to me. I've dipped my toes in at people's lowest tiers just to get a feel for their work. I've done trades. I've booked single sessions instead of full packages. I've hired for small chunks instead of the whole thing.

And every single time, I've walked away thinking the same thing: why did I wait so long?
